We got up early, had breakfast (Bread, Butter, Orange Marmalade, Apple Juice & Tea) & left for Diskit (Nubra Valley). Nubra Valley is north of Leh.
Nubra Valley unfolding beyond the world’s highest stretch of drivable road as it crosses the Khardungla Pass. Khardungla Pass (18380 feet) is the world’s highest motorable road! The sight from the Khardungla Pass is simply breath-taking. We clicked a lot of photos there & left for Diskit.
The road to Diskit from Khardungla is absolutely picturesque. We even traveled through a snow clad patch! We got so excited to see the snow that we got down from the car and clicked a few pics of us playing in the snow! On the way, we visited the Buddha Statue. Its a Gigantic (Truly Gigantic!) statue and there is a beautiful temple inside it. It’s a 30 metre of the sitting Buddha up the hill side above the town to the Diskit Gompa built in 1420.
After that we reached Hotel Olthang (our place of stay) in Diskit in a few minutes. We checked into our room, dropped our luggage and left for Hundur. It was 4.30pm and we were super hungry as we had not had lunch yet. So before going for a Camel ride at Hundur, we stopped by at a road side restaurant (D.K. Restaurant) for lunch. There was a dog outside the restaurant who kept looking at us with hungry eyes and wagging tail.
Both of us felt that we must atleast offer the dog some biscuits. So we fed him an entire pack of Monaco Biscuits. He was that hungry. After that we headed for Hundur. Hundur is a tiny village in a wooded valley beyond some impressive sand dunes.
The village is renowned for it’s herd of bactrian double humped camels which you will invariably encounter if you walk out onto the dunes. The camel ride is quite an experience and you can opt for a 15 min short ride (Rs.150) or a longer 30 min ride (Rs.300)
We chose the latter and it was really fun. We got some really nice pictures in the Hundur Desert. After that we got back into our car and headed to our Hotel. We wanted to make an STD call and in search of a STD Booth, on our way we came across a salon called – Sonu Nigam Tip Top Hair Cutting!!!
After making a few calls, we came back to our Hotel, had dinner and went to sleep. We were treated very well by Mr. Narendra Kumar who was also the chef of the hotel. He was from Pune and a Maharashtrian and when he came to know that we were from Mumbai & also Maharashtrian’s he took very good care of us. He even made personalised home type food for us which was a very kind gesture.
We had a very good dinner and dozed off the sleep…
